torrent file extension (archive_name.torrent)
Torrent files are not really a multimedia file it's more like a description of what you will download once you open it in a torrent Manager. My personal favorite is uTorrent as it's free fast and tiny.
There are many others applications that can deal with torrent files for example bitTornado and Vuze.
The most important about torrent files is that there isn't any actual content on the torrent file, at least nothing we could care, but if we open it in for example uTorrent the program will start downloading the actual files to your disk.
Another thing you must remmember about torrent files is that you have a lot of sites to search for them, some of the best know are:
isohunt.com
thepiratebay.org
eztv.it (for TV Series).

Vuze
A very nice Java based bitTorrent client, used to open torrent files.
To be true is more similar to Ares than a bit torrent client, and that makes it my second choice but you can try it as it uses one very nice free database for it searches.
So if you need to open a torrent file and you are a bit tired of uTorrent you should give Vuze a change as it might open your heart to a new java based torrent file manager.
